November 4, 2009 – Lifts haven’t even opened in Niseko, but local powderhounds are lapping up the waist high powder they found yesterday after two days and nights of heavy snowfall. This storm has accumulated 30-40 cm in the village and reports of 60cm up high, with more of the big light flakes still falling.

Snowfalls have been early and plentiful this season in Niseko, with strong storms coming in from the Siberian Peninsula, gathering moisture across the Sea of Japan and then hitting the peaks of the Niseko region on the northern island of Hokkaido.  This ongoing weather pattern is why Niseko receives up to 16 metres of snow each season, and how it became referred to as the second snowiest resort on the planet by Forbes Traveler.

Expectations are high for a strong early season and lifts will open on November 20

Niseko is buzzing because this week it finally happens, the official opening of the mountain.  Are you going to be one of the first to take advantage of this? If so, be sure to take your camera with you for some action shots.  When you have your favourites picked out either email them to us or upload them to this blog directly. It will be helpful to have the date function turned on because the first photo of the year will win a special prize.   It doesn’t stop there. Share your photos here and we will be voting on our favourites. The winners and their prizes will be announced here so check back often. To get things started, we have uploaded our picture of the first snow on the Mountain this year. Thanks to Michael Vaeth from our good friends at Niseko RDC for sharing it.

It’s not too late to join in the opening festivities.  If you haven’t yet sorted out your accommodation for your Niseko trip, contact our reservations Queen, Hayley Richards (hayley.richards@nisekoresortsgroup.com) for our best last minute deals.
